New scholarship offers broker chance of a lifetime

19 Dec 2011

Commercial property insurer, Affiliated FM, is offering a once in a lifetime experience for a broker to learn more about the science of property loss prevention at the
FM Global Research Campus in Rhode Island, USA.

Fires, explosions, cyclone-force winds and flying debris are all in a day's work at the Global Research Campus - considered the world’s premiere centre for property loss-prevention scientific research and product testing.

The campus has four main laboratories: Fire Technology, Natural Hazards, Electrical Hazards and Hydraulics. Covering 10,000m2, the Fire Technology Lab (pictured) is the centrepiece of the Campus and is the largest facility of its type in the World. The laboratory's sheer size allows researchers to replicate warehouse-size fires of up to 1,093C.

In the Natural Hazards Lab, researchers replicate even the toughest weather phenomena and recreate cyclone-force winds of 258 km/h. A hail gun launches ice balls of varying sizes, to simulate moderate and severe hail storms, and a debris cannon shoots simulated windblown wood projectiles at speeds matching those of a real cyclone to determine impact resistance of doors, windows and siding.

Commenting on the new scholarship, Glen Drinnan, Director Affiliated FM said: "If you have never seen how a handful of dust can create a huge explosion, what at plank of wood can do to a thinly boarded window, or how quickly a major warehouse fire can take hold, and how effective sprinklers can be in controlling it, then a visit to the FM Global Research Campus will be a truly eye opening experience.

"The Affiliated FM Scholarship is designed to give one lucky broker a truly unique experience and a valuable insight into what can happen to a building. It will also help demonstrate how the majority of all losses are actually preventable," he added.

To be eligible, brokers must work for an Affiliated FM supporting broker, have worked on an Affiliated FM or equivalent style account, and write a 500-word discussion document on "Who benefits from loss prevention?".

Entries close in February 2012. For further information please contact your Affiliated FM Production Underwriter or Belinda Guimaraes on 02 8273 1442.
