Austbrokers Glenn Lambert reveals some of the lessons he has picked during his career.

1. Be willing to adapt
"I've worked for a number of companies that have undergone mergers or takeovers. It’s important to be able to recognise the culture of organisations and fit into them. Sometimes you can go backwards or sideways, however, opportunities will always appear if you look and work hard enough."
2. Build a personal brand
"Everyone has to protect and build their personal brand. There are some people who damage their personal brand by getting confused about what is a work function and what is a social occasion, for example."
3. Maintain contacts
"Along the way, maintain effective business relationships. It is extremely important to build and maintain your network of contacts because often this is where the opportunities come from [and where] mentors and, more importantly, friends reside."
4. Balance work and personal life
"Emotional responses or actions are rarely useful in the business world. I had a situation about 15 years ago where my emotions boiled over at work and I said something that I later regretted. Not only was it a lesson in humility, it was a personal financial lesson as I felt I needed to move on."
5. Be brave
"It's important not be frightened of making mistakes and taking risks. You can go through positive learning experience when you make mistakes, however, if the lesson is not put into practice, it can quickly become quite negative."
