Raising community awareness of the importance of insurance, and making NIBA College the preferred supplier of education services for brokers in Australia have been identified as Key Objectives for NIBA after the Board of Directors reaffirmed the organisation's role and its future objectives.
December's meeting of the Board in Melbourne reaffirmed NIBA's role as follows:
NIBA is the national trade association for insurance brokers in Australia. NIBA represents and speaks with authority on behalf of all insurance brokers, and through NIBA College promotes continuing high standards of excellence, competence and professionalism in the insurance broking industry. NIBA also provides an evolutionary range of quality services, support and advice to its members to ensure they remain relevant, contemporary and proactive in the provision of insurance broking services and providing their clients (the Australian community) with superior insurance coverage.
After a careful review of issues and challenges facing insurance brokers and their clients, the Board has determined four Key Objectives for NIBA. The Key Objectives are:
1. Representation
NIBA aims to be the 'One Voice' for insurance brokers in Australia, representing their interests to governments, regulators and the community.
NIBA will represent the interests of insurance brokers, on behalf of their clients (policyholders) to governments, regulators, media, consumer groups and the wider community, with integrity, and in a manner that is respected, credible and relevant.
2. Professionalism
NIBA will work to ensure insurance brokers are perceived as having high professional standards, and are regarded by their clients as trusted advisers.
NIBA will set and promote quality standards for insurance broking in Australia, and will work to enhance and promote the professionalism and standing of brokers and the community's confidence in brokers. NIBA will also provide opportunities to achieve and maintain high levels of professional competence through NIBA College. NIBA will also maintain and promote the NIBA Code of Practice, including effective Code compliance, internal and external dispute resolution.
3. Community Awareness
NIBA will work to ensure the community understands the importance of insurance and the role of insurance brokers.
NIBA will promote the importance of insurance and the role of insurance brokers in that industry to the community at large. NIBA will promote the role of insurance brokers as "trusted adviser" of the client on risk and risk transfer. NIBA will promote the need for the community to have access to expert and professional advice on insurance related matters.
4. Member Services
NIBA will provide members with relevant and appropriate support and services.
NIBA will continue to provide a range of support and services to members, including the NIBA Convention, Young Professionals' forums and mentoring programs, Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme, broker and industry communications, technical and legal support and information on new and developing trends in emerging risks, technology and the economy.
NIBA CEO Dallas Booth said the Board's reaffirmation of NIBA's Role, and the confirmation of the Key Objectives, provides a clear way forward with clear objectives and priorities for the next few years.
"I look forward to working with the Board and the members to achieve the goals that have now been set for the organisation. We're taking all the good work that has been done in recent years and we will develop and enhance that in the context of the of the issues and challenges facing brokers today."
With a key objective that of enhancing the professionalism of the industry, Booth stated his ambition to make NIBA College the preferred supplier of education and professional services for insurance brokers in Australia, while he also revealed that NIBA will work closely with the ICA and ANZIIF on their respective "Brand Insurance" and "Know Risk" campaigns, which aim to educate the public on the worth and value of insurance.
NIBA's Objectives and Strategies will be a key agenda item for discussion at the 2012 Sundowner presentations, the dates of which are currently being finalised. "We will be looking for members' input during the Sundowners sessions to see if they are comfortable with our objectives," Booth said. "Our new strategy is designed to be a live document and we will review it annually, so members' ideas and feedback are most welcome."
