The Careers in Insurance campaign is off to a flying start after appearing at two major university careers fairs in Melbourne and Sydney in March.
The industry was represented by brokers, underwriters and insurance lawyers at the two events, which exceeded expectations, according to those in attendance.
Broker Ben Attenborough of Earth Insurance was one of the young insurance professionals present on the day at the Melbourne University Careers Fair. He said the level of interest generated was phenomenal.
“We had great levels of engagement with the fair attendees, and they were very receptive to the idea that a career in insurance is one they should really consider,” he said.
“It was a lot of fun, and it was great to be involved in such a positive event that featured a full cross-section of the insurance community. I think we surprised a few people and if only a few of those go on to seriously consider insurance as a career path, then that’s a great start for the campaign.”

Attenborough’s views were echoed by Zurich Australia’s Scott Woodward, a member of the NIBA NSW YP Committee, who manned the Careers in Insurance stand at the careers fair at the University of Technology Sydney in late March.
As well as being approached by a range of business and accounting students, he also fielded queries from engineering and forensic science students, all of whom were interested in how their skills could be applied to the insurance sector.
“For most of them, insurance just hasn’t been on their radar at all, and they had been thinking about careers in banking and accounting. but there was a lot of interest in what we had to say about the benefits of a career in insurance,” Woodward said. “There were hundreds of students in attendance, so it was great to get in front of so many of them.”
A cross-industry initiative, spearheaded by ANZIIF, in conjunction with NIBA and the Insurance Council of Australia, Careers in Insurance aims to put the spotlight on the industry like never before, helping to attract great talent to insurance – and retain it.
The campaign website www.careersininsurance.com.au is now live. As well as being a central information hub about the types of roles and career opportunities available in insurance, there is also a section that allows users to see the types of insurance roles that might suit them, based on their interests and personalities.
The site is expected to shortly be expanded to also post entry level roles and graduate opportunities, while a CV repository will make it easy for businesses to connect directly with young talent.
NIBA CEO Dallas booth added: “We are extremely proud to be strong supporters of this campaign, and having been involved since its initial planning stages.
“I would urge all our members to get behind the campaign, and share word of it with their networks. By doing so we can all do our part to raise awareness of the benefits of a career in insurance, and help attract the next crop of bright talent. We all win from that.”
