The NIBA NSW Committee recently appeared at a careers expo for high school students to highlight the opportunities available to young talent within the insurance industry.

NIBA Vice-President and Austbrokers AEI Transport Managing Director Tim Wedlock attended the careers export held at Knox Grammar School, along with Austbrokers’ Rebecca Wilson and Gow-Gates Managing Director Charles Gow-Gates.

“I asked if we would be able to have a stand at the expo, in conjunction with the universities, to demonstrate what we are all about, answer questions and encourage greater awareness of insurance as a career of choice,” Wedlock says.

“It provided a really good opportunity to ask the students what interested them and allow the different aspects of insurance to broaden their awareness of what was available.”

NIBA’s presence at the expo was a part of what Wedlock hopes to be an ongoing promotion of the industry to young school leavers considering their future options.

“A lot of people fall into insurance, as we say, but not a lot of people fall out of it. It’s not a profession that is explained well enough, I believe, at school level or at university as to what it can offer,” Wedlock says.

“My goal is to try to promote the profession, and show why insurance is a wonderful career. We are trying to open up our vision as to how far we can take this kind of promotion and to change how we support what we stand for.”
