Broker of the Year flies high in the US

Last year’s NIBA Broker of the Year has returned from his prize trip to the US, having brushed shoulders with former presidents and rock royalty.

Danny Gumm took the 2013 Broker of the year crown home from last year’s NIBA Convention, earning him a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience courtesy of award sponsor Zurich.

The Parmia Insurance Director spent a week in New Orleans as a VIP guest of Zurich for the PGA Zurich Classic golf tournament.

“We got looked after and spoiled rotten by Zurich,” Gumm says.

“It was an incredible experience. We had business class flights there and back, which was a first for myself and extremely nice. Now my wife keeps telling me she can’t fly economy again.”

As well as taking in acts like Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton at the New orleans Jazz festival, Gumm was given the opportunity to attend a Zurich-run business forum, networking and hearing addresses from the likes of former US president George W Bush.

“It was an excellent interview,” Gumm says.

“He talked very openly about 9/11 and what went through his mind.

“But the other side of it was the networking.

“I had the chance to meet the top executives of Zurich, not only from America but Europe also, as well as meeting my peers and people that do similar type of work to what I do here in Australia.

“It’s very beneficial from a business standpoint, to understand it all on a far larger scale than what Parmia does or even the large companies in Australia do. It’s just a whole different ball game.”

This year’s Broker of the Year will be named at the 2014 NIBA Convention, set for 14-16 September in Adelaide, with the five finalists from the regional awards battling it out for this year’s top gong.

The winner will receive a similar travel opportunity, valued at approximately $20,000.

Zurich Australia’s Head of Customer and Product Proposition Nick Cook says Gumm typified what Broker of the year was all about.

“What we’re looking for is the insurance professional who most clearly demonstrates the value that an insurance broker brings to customers,” he says.

It’s very beneficial from a business standpoint, to understand It all on a far larger scale than what Parmia does or even the large companies in Australia do.

“With the rise of direct insurance, it is going to be the unique value brokers can offer their clients that will make this industry successful.”

Gumm says he highly recommends brokers to get involved in the NIBA awards program at any opportunity.

“I have so much gratitude to NIBA for giving me the chance to win this prize and also to Zurich for sponsoring it,” he says.

“The whole process is excellent, from whoa to go.

“The prize and everything involved with it is just incredible. It is just one of best things I have ever been involved in.”
