Two directors appointed to Insurance Council Board

The Insurance Council of Australia Limited (ICA) Board has appointed two directors: Tim Plant, CEO General Insurance, Zurich Financial Services Australia and John Myler, CEO Insurance, the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland.

The appointments were made at the ICA Board meeting and Annual General Meeting held in Sydney. The ICA Board now has 13 Directors.

ICA Executive Director and CEO Rob Whelan said: “Tim and John have a combined 45 years of insurance industry experience.

“John has held executive roles at Allianz, Customer Essential and Royal & Sun Alliance.

“Tim’s experience crosses insurance, reinsurance and financial services. Tim is also a director of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance.

“The ICA Board is looking forward to utilising their expertise, knowledge and perspective to help shape the ICA’s response to the regulatory, political and climate change challenges facing the insurance industry.”

ARPC executive team update

Dr Christopher Wallace, Chief Executive of Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC), has announced changes to its senior executive team.

Michaela Flanagan, previously ARPC Chief Operating Officer (COO), has joined Swiss Re as Head of Branch Operations ANZ, with responsibility for property/casualty, life and health reinsurance operations in Australia.

“I would like to congratulate Michaela on her new role in the reinsurance industry and thank her for her significant contribution to ARPC,” said Dr Wallace.

Janice Nand has been appointed Acting COO while ARPC completes the recruitment process for the Chief Strategy and Operating Officer (CSOO) role.

Nand joined ARPC in February 2019 from the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services industry where she worked as a Director, Report. Before her role with the Royal Commission, she worked as a Partner with HWL Ebsworth Lawyers in Canberra and with Sparke Helmore Lawyers in Sydney.

Zurich bolsters claims team with senior appointment

Zurich Australian Insurance Limited (Zurich) has today announced the appointment of Craig Newton as Head of Claims, General Insurance.

Newton brings more than thirty years’ industry experience spanning claims, underwriting and operations roles, and has worked in key markets across Australia and Asia Pacific. He reports to Hilary Bates, Chief Claims & Operations Officer, and in this market-facing role has operational and technical oversight of Zurich’s frontline claims teams.

Bates said: “Craig is passionate about the experience of our broker partners and customers, and through his experience will accelerate our progress in developing a market-leading claims proposition. I am delighted to welcome him to the team and I look forward to working with him to achieve our ambitions around customer and broker service.”
