Suncorp has stepped in to help rebuild a community centre in Cape York that was damaged beyond use by Cyclone Ita in April 2014.
The Yungee Healing Place is a Hopevale community centre dedicated to helping youth redefine their attitude toward domestic violence, and nurturing those at risk of suicide.
The centre organises fishing trips and camps for members of the community, as well as assisting young families with childcare and other domestic responsibilities.
The Yungee founders, Des and Estelle Bowen, have been unable to facilitate the usual activities of the centre since it was damaged last year, but are now on their way to re-establishing services to the community.
“We became aware of the opportunity to provide assistance to Yungee and this was quickly embraced by the Suncorp Commercial Claims team,” says Suncorp Commercial Claims Executive General Manager Matt Pearson.
“A wide range of fundraising activities were undertaken by our people across Australia and these proved very successful, with over $10,000 being generated.
“We invited our panel builders Nuveau Constructions Qld, RPF Building and Dankav to lend a hand and the response was overwhelming.”
The construction was complete within four weeks, with a number of improvements to the facility made in the process.
“This really picked me up because now I can go on with our dream,” Bowen says.
“With this building, we can now start planning and start bringing people out.”
