The NIBA mentoring program in NSW drew to a close last night with presentations from mentees about their experience.
Watch account manager, multinational client practice, Arthur J. Gallagher Alvina Carcary’s presentation about the impact mentoring has had on her career.
“My introduction to the NIBA mentoring program was actually through a former colleague of mine who used to be a mentor. Once I looked into it, I was immediately taken by the idea. I’ve been in the industry for 12 years and I’ve never had the benefit of a mentor outside my immediate working environment.
The question was, given my experience, did I want to be a mentor or a mentee?
I applied to be a mentee because I didn’t want to pass up the chance of learning from someone more experienced and knowledgeable. Besides, I could always be a mentor later, but probably not the other way round.
Further, while I had been in the industry for a long time, I felt somehow ‘lacking’ as I had only worked in Australia for four years.
I wanted to be mentored by someone who ran their own brokerage, was technically strong, and who knew how to run a wholesome business in the local market. And NIBA delivered!
David Michell from The Protectors Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd and I were paired up. I must confess originally feeling apprehensive – our experiences and careers varied greatly, but NIBA knew what it was doing and we couldn’t have been a better match.
David was from the very beginning a committed mentor who sought to inspire me with confidence in myself, and push me into taking chances. The mentorship felt very much like a partnership geared towards getting me to raise my profile, and portray my worth.
For me, it was refreshing to talk to someone honestly about the industry, especially someone with such intimate knowledge of Australian insurance peculiarities and of the local industry movers and shakers.
David and I are now firm friends and I will forever be grateful to NIBA for running such a fantastic program. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who is even remotely thinking of joining to take the plunge. You won’t regret it.”
