SA fires deemed catastrophic

The bushfires sweeping through the Adelaide Hills have been officially declared a catastrophe, with a dozen homes and a number of businesses already destroyed.

South Australia Premier Jay Weatherill says the number of burnt homes is expected to reach at least 30, while more than 1100 properties are at risk as of Monday.

Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) CEO Rob Whelan says there are no firm estimates of damage yet.

“Insurers will continue to monitor the situation, and I expect the ICA will have a firmer grasp of the extent of the damage in the next few days as owners return to their properties, assess the damage and contact their insurer or insurance broker,” he says.
