Keep up to date with new appointments across the insurance industry this month.


Gabija Simmonds has been appointed to the position of General Counsel for the ACE Group in Australia and New Zealand.

Simmonds brings more than 20 years of experience to the role, including her most recent position, Head of Legal – Insurance, Westpac.

“Gabija’s broad understanding of the insurance industry and her experience managing an in-house legal function are essential qualities for success in this role,” says John French, Country President for ACE in Australia and New Zealand.



Simon Munday has been appointed to the position of CFO, Ansvar Insurance, replacing Deirdre Blythe.

“I am very excited about taking on the role of CFO and working with our CEO, Warren Hutcheon, and the executive team to deliver Ansvar’s strategy and strengthen the company’s position as a leader in its specialist sectors,” Munday says.

Ansvar has also appointed David Lubbe to the position of Risk Solutions Advisor for Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

“As part of my new role, I will be developing tailored risk solutions which will offer value to our customers and protect their business from potential losses. I am thrilled to be part of the Ansvar team,” Lubbe says.



The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has announced the appointment of Dr June Smith to the position of Lead Ombudsman (Investments and Advice), effective as of 1 June.

Smith will be joining FOS from her current position as CEO of the Code Compliance Monitoring Committee for the Code of Banking Practice and General Manager of Code Compliance and Monitoring, FOS.

Smith will be joining John Price, Lead Ombudsman (General Insurance), and Philip Field (Banking and Finance), along with the rest of the FOS team of experiences staff, in order to provide trustworthy independent dispute resolution services.



David Russel, RAA Insurance Chief Executive, and Helen Troup, Commonwealth Insurance Managing Director, have been appointed to the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) Board of Directors.

ICA President and Chairman Andy Cornish welcomes Russel and Troup to the Board, expressing his faith in their contribution to the future direction of ICA.

“David Russell and Helen Troup are highly regarded and experienced in the industry, and we look forward to their contributions to Board discussions and deliberations,” Cornish says.

“With the industry facing many challenges, including five declared weather catastrophes in 2015, it’s important for the ICA Board to have recourse to the valued skills and perspectives of its directors.”
