Victorian broker goes international

Gators on the golfing green, an audience with former President Bill Clinton and a perpetual carnival atmosphere greeted inaugural NIBA Broker of the Year Alan Wilson as he began his week of VIP treatment at the New Orleans PGA Zurich Classic.

Wilson, Director of Alan Wilson Insurance Brokers, says his experience was “absolutely fantastic”.

“I couldn’t have had a better time. From the exceptional music scene to meeting with Zurich top brass in New York and London, it was an incredible experience,” Wilson says. The Zurich-sponsored prize included seven nights at the Roosevelt Hotel during the New Orleans PGA Zurich Classic, exclusive access to many golf-related functions and tickets to the New Orleans Jazz Festival to hear the likes of Frank Ocean, Phoenix, The Black Keys, Fleetwood Mac and Billy Joel.

Wilson also joined fellow Zurich broker guests and Zurich’s North American team to take part in the St Bernard community housing charity project, giving back to the New Orleans community that is still recovering from the devastating effects of recent hurricanes.

“Every day was a new experience and getting the chance to meet American brokers and pick their brains about products and services we don’t have in Australia was just fascinating.”

“It’s hard to imagine the damage and how far the community has come in the aftermath. Taking part in the community projects Zurich is involved with was really rewarding and a great aspect of the trip for me,” Wilson says.

Spreading the word

Wilson’s trip mixed business with pleasure as Zurich facilitated meetings in New York and London with its business leaders. Judging panellist member and Head of Customer and Product Proposition at Zurich Nick Cook says Wilson had been an excellent advocate for the Australian insurance industry.

Judging for the 2013 NIBA Broker of the Year Award is currently underway, with winners from each state revealed at Gala events around the country.

“When we’re judging the Broker of the Year candidates we look for someone who is respected not only in the industry but also in the community,” Cook says.

“Alan Wilson is a great advocate for the industry, a fantastic supporter of growth and development and a dedicated community member, all qualities we stand for at Zurich.”

The national winner of the award this year, to be announced at the NIBA Convention in October, can look forward to an all-expenses-paid trip similar to Wilson’s.

“This has been a tremendous and humbling journey,” Wilson says.

“From the moment I was nominated to the moment I came home from the trip I’ve felt nothing but extremely lucky to work with some of the brightest young professionals, most experienced senior brokers and to be associated with the best our industry has to offer.

“All I have to say to anyone thinking of nominating a colleague or principal is go for it. This is the best way to tell someone you appreciate them.”
